San Sebastián of the Gomera

san sebastian de la gomeraFrom the conquest of the island by the kingdom of Castile at the beginning of the XV Century, the borders of this nucleus with 500 years of history has been growing and evolving from what it first was a settlement on the border of a fertile precipice in front of a bay sheltered for the anchorage of ships. At this moment in time, there is a port that is the door to the island, due to the continuous come and go of passenger ships which communicate the island with Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro.  San Sebastián de la Gomera keeps interesting buildings from its past with architectonic examples that indicate the religious, political, social and military activity that this island has carried out throughout more than five centuries.

Hermigua

hermiguaIt is a beautiful agricultural valley, dedicated to a great extent to the culture of the export banana, as well as to the production of the wine and vegetables for the island.  El Cedro, located in the limits of the Park National and wrapped by a great forest mass of green mount of the Canary Islands, has a permanent water brook throughout the year and very picturesque houses. We must emphasize the Convent of San Pedro, the Church of the Incarnation (XV century), and the Ethnographic Museum of Virgilio Brito, Los Telares, the park with a field for « canarian wrestling »…

Agulo

aguloIt is the smallest municipality of La Gomera, nailed on the feet of a high basalt wall and forming a green balcony over the sea, and with a white small village, made up of the nuclei of La Montañeta, Las Casas and El Charco. Very attractive town considered “the Jewel of La Gomera” by its well-taken care of aspect: stoned streets and tile roof houses grouped with orchards and cultivated grounds all around. Worthy of mentioning is the church of San Marcos raised in the XVII century, and where the virgin of La Merced lodges, patron saint of the area.

Vallehermoso

vallehermosoThe old corner of Agana is the greatest one of La Gomera. The municipality lodges within a third of the National Park. Inside is La Laguna Grande (Great Lagoon), a very used recreational zone with furnaces, infantile zone, toilets, restaurants, etc. Other protected grounds of the municipality are the Natural Monuments of: Los Órganos Roque Cano, La Fortaleza y el Lomo de Carrtón. Within its recent infrastructures we could mention: the Insular Wine Cellar, the Marine Park, the Botanical Garden, the Craft’s Centre …

Valle Gran Rey

valle gran reyThe municipality of Valle Gran Rey, corresponds to the pre-Hispanic corner of Orone, where the most powerful indigenous king resided. The escarped relief of the municipality has deep precipices, like the one of Valle Gran Rey, and vertical cliffs. There are many winding footpaths, which are today a patrimony for the hikers.   In the municipality of Valle Gran Rey we should emphasize the Hermitage of San Nicolas de Torentino (Arure) and the Hermitage of La Adoración de Los Reyes (Adoration of the Kings), both from the XVI century. Also, it is worth mentioning a relatively recent work: The Restaurant-school “Caesar Manrique”, built by the illustrious artist from Lanzarote with its singular architecture of balconies and terraces, forming an exquisite relief that arises surrounded by rich island flora.

Alajeró

alajeroThe term of Alajeró corresponds to the old part of the territories of Ipalán and Orone. Seated on the slope of a hill, the town of Alajeró is formed by modest constructions of stone and charming palm trees and the calm disorder of the small village that seems to come off from the mountain, giving the impression that it has stopped in the time to vegetate to the margin of history.  The recent inauguration of the Insular Airport of the Gomera in this municipality, has, to some point, activated this part of the island. Within this municipality we find La Playa de Santiago, considered the second tourist centre of La Gomera. Interesting sights are the Church of San Salvador, and the Hermitage of Ntra. Sra. del Buen Paso, whose celebration is a forced one for all those lovers of the romerías (local celebration).
