To visit Vegueta we recommend starting in the square of Santa Ana, which still carries its original layout.

veguetaSome of the main constructions of this zone are Las Casas Consistoriales (Consistorial Houses), el Palacio del Obispo (Palace of the Bishop), the cathedral, and the museum of sacred art.

Not far from Santa Ana, in the backside of the Cathedral, we find the House Museum of Columbus that reminds us of the town’s passage of this discoverer on his trip to America.

Soon after the town was founded, Triana was born, in the other side of the ravine of Guiniguada, which now is the highway towards the centre of the island. From the shore of Vegueta, we can see the square of Hurtado de Mendoza and the Perez Galdós theatre.

trianaThe street of Triana, with the road level floors occupied specialized shops, offers different samples of the historical architecture of the city, emphasizing modernist facades. In its northern end is the Hermitage of San Telmo, located in the park of the same name that once was the old Wharf of Las Palmas.

The foundations of the hermitage date back to 1694 and it has beautiful altarpieces. In the park of San Telmo, marked by the presence of the sober Building of the Military government, is the recovered Modernist Kiosk and the Kiosk of Music.

A great historical patrimony, buildings, houses, facades, bridges that date from the time of the conquerors with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city, the diversity of its people, its cultures, the new constructions, new walking paths, shopping centres, recreation and leisure areas…a fantastic fusion.
