HIKES IN LA GOMERA Print E-mail

1. South Route: Duration of 6 to 7 hours.  

The route begins on the south-western zone of the island, in the direction of Playa de Santiago. In the ascent we can observe a total view of the capital. We stop in the Viewpoint of La Degollada de Peraza (view of the precipice of Villa) and then to the precipice of Benchijigua.

We then descend until Playa de Santiago, fishing town by excellence. Thence and following the road towards Alajeró, we find the Hermitage of Ntra. Sra. Del Buen Paso and the oldest dragon tree of La Gomera, which is on the outskirts of the town.  

Taking the diversion towards Chipude, our next stop will be will be El Cercado, Las Hayas and the nucleus of Chipude. In this last one we find the imposing silhouette of La Fortaleza (Natural monument) where important archaeological remains have been found. Continuing with our route towards Valle Gran Rey we stop in the Viewpoint of Palmarejo or Viewpoint of Caesar Manrique where we will enjoy an impressive view of the Valley. We descend until Valle Gran Rey, main tourist municipality of the island.

We return taking the same road leaving Arure behind, towards La Laguna Grande, recreational zone of the island. From there and continuing on the same route, the following stop would be the “Alto de Garajonay”, highest point with 1.487m altitude.  We arrive to the last section of this route, directing us to San Sebastián, but stopping first in “Cumbres (summits) of Tajaqué” and “Los Roques”.   

 

2. Northern Route:  Duration of 6 to 7 hours.

We will leave from San Sebastián towards Hermigua. We will cross the Northern zone of the island, which has the most colourful and green settlements of La Gomera.  

Leaving behind the tunnel of La Cumbre, we enter in the Valley of Hermigua in which we must emphasize a visit to: Artisan centre “Los Telares”, Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Church of Ntra.Sra de la Encarnación .  We continue towards Agulo, the smallest town of this island: Plaza (square) de Leoncio Bento, Church of San Marcos and the Visitor centre “Juego de Bolas", where we will find a exhibition of Nature and culture from La Gomera.  

From there and through the same road we will arrive to the northern municipality of Vallehermoso to visit the old town and to continue towards the recreational zone of Epinar. From there to La Laguna Grande, recreational zone of the island and then thorugh the same route we come across would be the Alto de Garajonay", highest point with 1.487m altitude.  We arrive to the last section of this route, directing us to San Sebastián, but stopping first in “Cumbres (summits) of Tajaqué” and “Los Roques”.   

 

3. North-South Route:  Duration of 4 to 5 hours.

We will leave from San Sebastián towards Hermigua. We will cross the Northern zone of the island, which has the most colourful and green settlements of La Gomera. Leaving behind the tunnel of La Cumbre, we enter in the Valley of Hermigua in which we must emphasize the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Church of the Incarnation. We continue our way towards Agulo, the smallest town of the Gomera, with stones streets and its houses give a good sample of the canarian popular architecture. In the square of Leoncio Bento there is the Church of San Marcos. This town is famous for its typical its confectionery 

Following the road we arrive to Las Rosas and we will continue towards the Palmita to visit the Visitor Centre "Juego de Bolas". From this point we have 2 options:

  1. Discover El Bosque de Cedro (Cedar Forest)
  2. Continue towards the South and approach the Viewpoint Restaurant-School “Caesar Manrique”.

After this we will cross bordering the limits of Las Hayas Park, Cercado and Chipude. Leaving back the crossing of Igualero we go towards San Sebastián.
