La Restinga - Sabinosa

This route from La Restinga to Taibique was born with the town of La Restinga, which was used to get the merchandise that disembarked the boats in the Puertito de La Restinga to the town of El Pinar, like tiles, food, construction materials, etc. The town of El Pinar was the most populated nucleus of El Hierro after Valverde. El Pinar and Sabinosa have always had a special relationship. Their people communicated in two ways: first through La Dehesa (zone of communal pasture) and second through the Camino Real (Pinar-Sabinosa). Both towns were the most pastoral of the island, directing their cattle to the Meadow by different and particular ways.

When we begins this route in La Restinga, we start at sea level, and begin to ascend until Taibique (911m.), from here we go through El Aula de la Naturaleza (Nature’s classroom) and take the direction towards Cruz de los Reyes (Cross of Kings), at 1.350m altitude. This path crosses El Camino de la Virgen (Path of the Virgin) passing through Malpaso, tip of the island (1.501m) initiating the descent towards the deviation that  indicates that we are going to Sabinosa through the north-eastern slope.

As we descend, the vegetation we come across is mainly pine. At 1.040m altitude we arrive to the path of Mencáfete (Integral Reservation), a prodigy of vegetation and freshness. The descent continues through La Piedra del Rey (Stone of the King) (700m altitude), arriving at Sabinosa (300m) and follows the descent through agricultural areas and vineyards towards Pozo de la Salud (well of the Health) (0m) with waters that are considered to have medicinal properties.

Los Jables - Los Pastores

This footpath starts off from Taibique (911m), one of the most important population nuclei of El pinar, ascends through El Camino de los Jables, going through La Gorona del Viento, a semicircular or oval structure, closely tied to the works of pastures, like for example places of shelter or meeting points of the shepherds.

The path continues through La Hoya del Gallego (940m), zone where the fig trees and the almonds tree proliferate and whose proprietors are fundamentally the inhabitants of El Pinar, with their great cattle and agricultural roots.

The path goes towards the Centro de Interpretación del Julán (Center of Interpretation of Julán), which is located in the environs of the archaeological zone, with immense slopes towards the sea of Las Calmas, offering us spectacular views. The characteristics that define this well-known zone of Los Letreros de Julan are the following ones: sacrifice equipment, sepulchral caves, concheros (accumulation of shells), engravings and circular constructions. The oral tradition saw this as the place where the “bimbaches exerted justice”.

The Camino de los Pastores (Path of the Shepherds) has that denomination due to the pastoral use that it had from the shepherds of El Pinar, who took their cattle from this town to the Meadow, communal zone for pasturing.

After going through El Julan (1.000m), we follow through the Mountain of Tembárgena (897m) towards our destination, La Piedra (the Stone) of the Regidor (750m), behind the Hermitage of La Virgen de Los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings).
