museo naval barco de la virgen

The Naval Museum of the Boat of the Virgin keeps a memory of the sailors of the Island of La Palma. Together with the marine tradition, it keeps the memories yielded by the descending families from the nostalgic local sailors who took their boats made with wood from the mounts of the island through all the seas of the world. The Museum has the original models of the boats made in this coast by Don Sebastián Arozena and brothers, navigators and construction boats experts.

This Basque family established themselves on the island and in a short period of time made more than thirty sailboats, for example “La Verdad” of 500 tons, made in 1873.

The actual Boat of the Virgin was built with the initiative of Don Armando Yanes Carrillo and other illustrious locals. It is a reproduction of the Santa Maria boat, with which Columbus arrived in the American coasts in 1492. At the museum we can also find papers on parchments of incalculable value.
