LA ZARZA Y LA ZARCITA CULTURE PARK

Alongside Belmaco, it is the best-known archaeological site on the island. Dug out in 1941, it is located between two natural depressions: la Mata and Llano Negro, which are dubbed cabocos on the island (from the Portuguese cavouco, meaining hole). The rock carvings are wildly varied in their shape: some are circular, others meanders or spirals.

Their meaning has not yet been deciphered, but strong indications suggest they are related to springs and watercourses in the vicinity. Apart from the carvings, the centre features an exhibition with information about the environmental value of the surroundings, in the transition area between pinewoods and heather-myrtle forests.
